Synapsis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Synapsis is the currently unexplained phenomenon of two homologous chromosomes coming together and lining up side-by-side resulting in a bivalent (also known as a tetrad), or two homologous chromosomes that stay in close association during the first two phases of meiosis I (the stages being Prophase I and Metaphase I).
Synapsis takes place during prophase I. When homologous chromosomes synapse, they come closer together until they are connected by a protein complex called the synaptonemal complex. When the non-sister chromatids intertwine, segments of chromatids (also known as genes) break apart at corresponding loci and are exchanged in a process known as a crossing-over. "Crossing over" exchanges genetic material between two homozygous chromosomes and increases genetic variability. It results in a chiasma, a region that is shaped like an X where crossing over can be seen.
Synapsis is also the name of a progressive band emerging from Quebec, Canada. A simple band containing 2 "connected" beings using their synapses to create artistic and emotional music. A polyrhytmic Drummer and a psychedelic Guitarist are the best combination for Synaptic music. Open your Synapses, and live for Synapsis.
