Symmes Creek

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Symmes Creek is a tributary of the Ohio River, about 60 mi (97 km) long, in southern Ohio in the United States.[1] Via the Ohio River, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River, draining an area of 357 mi² (925 km²).[2] The United States Board on Geographic Names settled on "Symmes Creek" as the stream's name in 1902. According to the Geographic Names Information System, it has also been known historically as "Simms," "Big Creek," and "Symms Creek."[3]

Symmes Creek rises in southeastern Jackson County and flows generally southwardly through Gallia and Lawrence Counties, through a portion of the Wayne National Forest. It joins the Ohio River at the village of Chesapeake, opposite Huntington, West Virginia.[4]
