Symbolic order

The symbolic order is a Lacanian term denoting our social understanding of the world we inhabit. This understanding is based on the acceptance of the Name of the Father and its importance, in which our foundations on linguistic (be it oral or otherwise) communication, relations with others based on this communication, knowledge of ideological conventions, and the acceptance of the the Other (called big 'O' Other, or big Other), are based upon.
