Syed Abu Ahmad Akif
Born in a family of university teachers (1958), Syed Akif spent the first 23 years of his life at the campuses of the University of Karachi, Columbia University and the Osaka University of Foreign Studies. After a master’s degree in microbiology, the process of self-discovery led him first to social science research and then copywriting for an advertising agency. Appearing in the career civil service examination in which he secured the first position in Pakistan. The past 23 years have seen him rise through increasingly responsible positions both in the "field" as well as the Federal and provincial secretariats. These have included prestigious assignments like those of Political Agent in Kila Saifullah, Vice Consul Hajj in Madinah Munawwarah, Secretary, Cotton Export Corporation, Additional Commissioner, Karachi, Additional Secretary to the Governor Sindh and Chief Instructor at the National Institute of Public Administration, Karachi, the mid-career training institution for Pakistani civil servants.
A turning point came with his selection as a Degree Fellow by the East West Center Hawaii; under this program he completed his Master of Political Administration from the University of Hawaii and also the International Certificate in Leadership. Currently he is a consultant in the Balochistan Resource Management Program provided as part of an Asian Development Bank technical assistance. Syed Akif is the author of several research papers and books and is busy chalking out a vigorous and self-rewarding academic road-map.
