Sydthy municipality

Sydthy municipality is a Danish municipality (Danish, kommune) in Viborg County on the west coast of Vendsyssel-Thy, a part of the Jutland peninsula in west Denmark. It is on the north bank of the Limfjord. The municipality covers an area of 322 km², and has a total population of 11,239 (2005). Its mayor is Arne Hyldahl, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Hurup.

Neighboring municipalities with land connection are Thyholm to the southeast and Thisted to the north. Neighboring municipality to the south Thyborøn-Harboøre on the Jutland mainland is separated from Sydthy by the waters of Nissum Bredning, a large body of water connected to the North Sea, which lies directly to the west of the municipality. The waters of the North Sea enter the Nissum Bredning through the Thyborøn Channel (Thyboren Kanal), which lie directly to the south of the municipality, and which separate it from Thyborøn-Harboøre municipality to the south. The Nissum Bredning is the westernmost part of the Limfjord (Limfjorden), a shallow sound that separates the island of Vendsyssel-Thy from the rest of the Jutland Peninsula to the south.

Neighboring municipality to the east Morsø is separated from the municipality by the waters of ‘’Visby Bredning’’).

By January 1, 2007 Sydthy municipality will cease to exist, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Hanstholm and Thisted municipalities to form a new Thisted municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 1,072 km² and a total population of 46,158 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Nordjylland ("North Jutland Region").
