Sydney Pearce

Sydney Pearce (born 1883 in Double Bay, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and died 1930) was an Australian rugby league player. His position of choice was as a Hooker.

Sydney Pearce played in the inaugural year of rugby league in Sydney in 1907. A skillful and strong player, Pearce played his whole career for Eastern Suburbs. He went on the Kangaroos tour of England in 1908-09 and also the Kangaroos tour of England in 1921-22. In all he played in fourteen of the first seventeen test matches between Australia and England. Despite having a long and injury free Rugby League career, Pearce died at the reasonably young age of 47 from what was determined "heart strain".

'Sandy' as he was sometimes referred to was also an enthusiastic boxer. His son, Joe Pearce, also represented Australia in eleven rugby league tests. His nephew Bobby Pearce was an Olympic gold medallist as a sculler.
