From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sydfalster is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Storstrøm County on the southern end of the island of Falster in south Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 113 km², and has a total population of 6,953 (2005), which is approx. quadrupled in the summer months, when tourists come to the beaches and resorts of the east coast of the island. Its mayor is Hans Aage Petersen, a member of the Conservative People's Party (Det Konservative Folkeparti) political party.

The site of its municipal council is the town of Væggerløse. Other towns in the municipality are Bøtø By, Gedesby Strand, Gedser, Idestrup, Marielyst, Nykøbing Strandhuse, and Skelby.

Neighboring municipalities with land connection are Nykøbing Falster and Stubbekøbing to the north. Neighboring municipality Nysted to the west lies on the island of Lolland, and is separated from the municipality by the waters of Guldborg Strait (Guldborgsund), which separate the two islands, and define most of the municipality's western border. To the south and east is the Baltic Sea.

Gedser Odde ("Point Gedser") at the island's far southern end is Denmark's southernmost point.

Ferry service connects the municipality at the town of Gedser to Rostock, Germany over the Baltic Sea.

By January 1, 2007 Sydfalster municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Nykøbing Falster, Nysted, Nørre Alslev, Sakskøbing, and Stubbekøbing municipalities to form the new Guldborgsund municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 907 km² and a total population of 63,533 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Sjælland ("Zealand Region").
