Sycamore School is an independent school in Indianapolis, Indiana and a nationally recognized leader in the education of academically gifted and talented children.
Sycamore School is well summed up by its mission statement: "Sycamore School exists so that academically gifted children can experience the enriched, accelerated education they need to reach their potential and to lead responsible, constructive, fulfilling lives." The school has approximately 420 students in preschool through Grade 8.
An individually administered intelligence test is required for admission (currently the WISC-4), and the vast majority of Sycamore students score between 130-150. On yearly achievement tests, as measured by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB), class means rank above the 95th percentile nationally in every category tested. Sycamore graduates have gone on to further academic success in both private and public high schools. Over 50% of its eighth grade graduates in 2002 went on to become National Merit Semi-finalists in high school.
Sycamore's fifth and sixth grade Knowledge Master Open team finished as national champions in the 2006 Spring Knowledge Master Open. The Knowledge Master Open involves a team of students working together to answer questions from all academic disciplines with accuracy and speed.
Competing against 405 schools from across the United States, as well as schools in Singapore and Korea, the team answered all 100 questions correctly, which is a first in the history of the competition. This performance earned the team first place in Indiana and first place in the nation. Sycamore's 900 points is the highest team score earned in this competition in over ten years and a new school record. The second place school was Webb Bridge Middle School in Georgia, which earned 865 points in the competition.
