[edit] Ohio county government
Salve, SwissCelt!
My apologies for not replying sooner. Your tweak of the sentence about county government, putting the county name first, is fine. I phrased it the way I did so I could speedily add the text to 87 articles. I noticed only a few of the county sites have been worked on except by the bots, e.g. Montgomery County, Ohio, Hamilton County, Ohio, and my own Warren County, Ohio. I went through and added the stuff about county government as well as noting the namesake of each one. (See my article List of Ohio county name etymologies for more info on them.) I've done a good number of Ohio articles (see the list here). I've also started work on Ohio's townships. If you'd like to start in on Logan County's, see the project page I created here. Ave! [edit] Listing cities as townships
I see you categorized Youngstown as a township. While that is technically true, it isn't what most people think of as a township. People looking at the category are probably looking for regular townships, not the paper ones. They can look elsewhere for the cities. --Beirne 04:23, May 28, 2005 (UTC)
- Twice now I had a long explanation typed up, only to have the browser eat it when it crashed. *grin* So let me quickly summarize my reasons:
- * The project prescribes this.
- * Historical continuity (Youngstown's history is such that development was all but planned to go from unplatted land to the city it is today)
- * Geographical continuity (with the Western Reserve's grid system of twps. at 5 mile intervals)
- * Urban townships: There are three in the Youngstown area, with a fourth that would qualify if only the trustees were to pass a resolution to that effect.
- The last three reasons make a "Youngstown Twp." article desirable. The first reason prevents a separate article to be written for the township; and even if one wanted to write a separate article, there's no township separate from the city on which to write an article. Youngstown isn't a "paper township"; the township is the city, and the city is the township. -SwissCelt 05:32, 28 May 2005 (UTC)
-
- Based on the historical point I guess it does make sense to include Youngstown. The situation is a little trickier there than in a city like Akron where the township had a different name and was incorporated into two cities. I think the wording in the project is overly broad, though. We should decide if paper townships should be included in the category. That discussion should probably move over to the township project page. --Beirne 12:34, May 28, 2005 (UTC)

- I agree. I took the liberty of c&p'ing this conversation over there. -SwissCelt 17:35, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wow!
Salve, SwissCelt!
Your discussion with Beirne about Ohio's township popped up on my watch list and I've added a few words there. I want to compliment you on the work you've been doing with townships, which I've not looked at in a couple. I'm impressed with you and Beirne's contributions. Between the three of us, it looks like we've done close to a hundred townships. I put up a notice some time ago asking if someone could get a bot to mine the Census data and create articles (as was done with all the cities and villages) but no one replied. Keep up the good work. Oh, where's the map of Logan County from? Does your source have other counties? Ave! PedanticallySpeaking 18:01, May 28, 2005 (UTC)
- Salve! The source is a PDF file, http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/geosurvey/pdf/cotwpmap.pdf , published by the Department of Natural Resources. Serendipitiously, it includes all of Ohio's townships, along with the location of each of Ohio's 88 county seats in relation to those townships. It was quite a find! I've been meaning to share it on the project page, but I just haven't had the chance yet.
- As far as bots go, I have no idea how to program or run a bot, or even how to go about asking for permission to run one. That would be nicer, yes, but alas I'm not the one to do it. For the time being, I've been hacking away with simple c&p edits. -SwissCelt 18:17, 28 May 2005 (UTC)
I wanted to let you know I put up a link on the township project page to the PUCO's mapping site [1]. It has incredible maps showing boundaries of telephone exchanges and a lot of other stuff. Really good site. PedanticallySpeaking 18:14, Jun 16, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Thank You
Dear Mr. SC,
I would personally like to thank you for your contributions to the GTA:VC soundtrack article, and to wish you a long and prosperous journey in the land of the WikiPedia. Thank you again for your help and discussion, and have a nice life.

- Pleasure working with you! Mind if I make one last edit, dumping the cleanup tag? SwissCelt 23:26, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Go right ahead. I'll re-arrange some things in the coming days/weeks/months, but I think it can be out of the public's cleanup eye for now. Thanks much, mysekurity 23:48, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] RTR
I got the infomation of SRG SSR idée suisse of the SRG SSR idée suisse website
- How odd. The RTR website's FAQ section has this to say:
- Now, I have only a rudimentary knowledge of Rumantsch, but I thought this meant that RTR has been independent of SRG SSR idée suisse since 1992. SwissCelt 30 June 2005 18:49 (UTC)
[edit] Edward D. Jones
I recently stubled across you article on Edward D. Jones. It is certainly well written, but as it stands doesn't strike a reader as a notable article. With a little backround searching it looks like Edward D. Jones and Company is quite the respectable company, and one who's founder could deserve an article. I don't know enough about the company to reference this, but thought that you might be able to do this. I was thinking maybe just a sentence or two describing the size/importance of the company he founded. Your article is just too modest as is. --Icelight 20:41, July 12, 2005 (UTC)
- Heh... well, whaddya know? I did write that. ;-)
- Being that the article is not on my watchlist, I can only assume that I wrote that while researching something related. Usually, if I find snippets of information relating to another article I'm editing, I'll include those in another article and, if it's new, mark that article as a stub. Somehow, I neglected to do so in this case. For now, I'll go ahead and stub the article, and expound on it when I get around to it... or a round tuit. SwissCelt 21:51, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Clerks.
Clerks. isn't listed on Clerk but it's on Clerk (disambiguation). Cburnett 05:10, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
- So it is. I think I'll redirect Clerks to Clerk (disambiguation), as someone coming straight from the search bar probably wouldn't type Clerks if they simply meant Clerk. They might, however (as I did) type Clerks meaning to find Clerks. Or perhaps something else entirely... ergo, the disambig. -- SwissCelt 06:26, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Bellefontaine, Ohio
There is no dispute about this seal, as far as I know. What I do know is that this image was requested for deletion on August 6, the uploader was notified the same day but did not react. Today, 12 days later, it was deleted. Thuresson 02:32, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, my mistake, then. That'll teach me to check for messages on the Commons every now and then, rather than just the English Wikipedia. Cheers, and I apologize. (By the way, I uploaded the image to the English Wikipedia, where I understand there won't be any copyright issues.) -- SwissCelt 02:36, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Township populations
Hi SwissCelt,
It's great that you've done so much with Ohio townships. However, I want to alert you to something that needs to be pointed out. You've been writing that the Census Bureau does not include municipalities in township population counts for Western Reserve townships. Unless something had changed over the past couple of years, this is not quite right.
In Ohio, municipalities may or may not be parts of the surrounding township. For example, Cortland is independent of Bazetta Township, but Newton Falls is technically part of Newton Township. People who live in Newton Falls can vote for township trustees. Now, when people talk about Newton Township, they're almost always referring just to the unincorporated portion. But the Census Bureau counts the whole thing, incorporated and unincorporated. The figure of 9,524 you have for Newton Township include Newton Falls.
This is not particular to the Western Reserve. You might be confused because over the past 15 or so years, several Northeast Ohio municipalities have seceeded from their respective townships. As a result, there are few "dependant" municipalities left in the area.
One interesting thing is the Census Bureau keeps counting Girard and Niles as parts of the surrounding townships, even though those cities are independent. Mwalcoff 05:43, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
- You're quite right, and thanks for pointing that out. This is the conclusion Beirne, PedanticallySpeaking, and I have reached on Talk:Paper township. Unfortunately, I think I've made that claim now on several articles, and haven't gone back to edit them as yet. -- SwissCelt 15:13, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Image:Bellefontaine seal.jpg has been listed for deletion
An image or media file you uploaded, Image:Bellefontaine seal.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please look there to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. |
- I noted my preference at the VfD. Thanks for letting me know! -- SwissCelt 11:50, 7 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Dates
Yes, pretty much any date which will display differently dependent on preferences should be wikified. The exceptions are article titles, parts of URLs, titles of organisations (July 28th Brigade), direct quotes (except unattributed translations), section headings (although I have broken this last rule), lyrics etc. etc.. The case in question the whole URL might be better as a footnote. Rich Farmbrough 12:10, 20 September 2005 (UTC)
