Swinfen

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Swinfen is a small community about two miles south of Lichfield in the parish of Weeford, Staffordshire.

Swinfen is referred to in the Domesday Book of 1086 when the Manor was held by the Bishop of Lichfield.

The present building known as Swinfen Hall was built as the Manor House in 1757 by Samuel Swinfen to a design by architect Benjamin Wyatt, ( father of James Wyatt) and remained the home of the Swinfen and Swinfen Broun families for almost two hundred years. The Hall was extended and improved in the early 20th century by Col. Michael Swinfen Broun. On his death in 1948 the estate was bequeathed to the Church and City of Lichfield, and most of the land was sold off. The Hall stood unoccupied for many years until acquired in 1987 by the present owners and converted to an hotel.

Swinfen Hall Young Offenders Institution complete with staff accommodation, and a country craft centre, stand adjacent to the entrance to Swinfen Hall Hotel.
