Swindon and Cricklade Railway

The Swindon & Cricklade Railway in Wiltshire operates a short section of the old Midland and South Western Junction Railway line between Swindon and Cricklade. At the present time 2006 a southward extension, now being built, will bring the line into the western outskirts of Swindon in Mouldon Hill Country Park. A further extension is being built beyond Hayes Knoll for an additional half-mile northwards towards Cricklade.

The Swindon & Cricklade Railway is one of the few British heritage railways to undertake complete reconstruction without an inheritance of track and buildings from British Rail. It began operations in the late 1970s at Blunsdon railway station, and has since extended to Hayes Knoll.

  • Steam Locomotives
    • Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0ST Slough Estates No. 3. In regular service.
    • Hawthorn Leslie 0-6-0ST Isabel. Arrived from the West Somerset Railway in 2006 and now in regular service.
    • Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0T No 1857. Undergoing a major restoration in the engine shed, boiler work is ongoing.
    • Andrew Barclay 0-6-0ST Swordfish No 2139. Undergoing a boiler Overhaul, expected to be finished in 2008.
    • Andrew Barclay 0-6-0ST Salmon No 2139. Undergoing final stages of Overhaul and is due to be in service in 2007.
    • Hunslet 0-6-0ST Gunby No 2413. Awaiting a major restoration but is currently in the engine shed.
    • Andrew Barclay 0-4-0ST Richard Trevithick No 2354. Undergoing a ten-yearly overhaul.
  • Diesel Locomotives
    • BR Class 03 0-6-0DM nos. D2022 and D2152. Both operational and sometimes a useful standby to a steam engine on a passenger train.
    • BR Class 08 0-6-0DE no. D3261. Awaiting restoration.
    • BR Class 73 Bo-Bo electro-diesel Sir Herbert Walker No E6003. Undergoing final electrical and bodywork repairs, expected to enter traffic in 2007.
    • Fowler 0-4-0DM Woodbine No 21442. Recently restored to working order and now on regular shunting duties.
    • Fowler 0-4-0DM No 7342. In regular use on works trains.
    • Fowler 0-4-0DM No 422003. Undergoing a major bodywork Overhaul and repaint.
  • Diesel Multiple Units
    • BR Class 119 unit 119021 (formed of 51074+51104). Awaiting restoration.
    • BR Class 207 unit 207203 (formed of 60127+60901). In service.
