Swindon League

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Swindon League is a local football league based in the town of Swindon, Wiltshire, England.

The league was established in 1985 by merging the North Swindon League, Swindon Central and West League and East Swindon District League together to form one main league.

Most of the clubs are amateur but the league has a good reputation as showcasing small local grass-roots football clubs and the struggle they have to cope with. Although called the Swindon League, the league also contain teams from the nearby small towns and villages.

There are 26 teams in Swindon League. Each team plays each of the other teams twice (once at home, once away) and is awarded three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss. From these points a league table is constructed.

At the end of each season the top team, together with the winner of the play-offs between the teams which finished in 2rd and 3rd positions, are promoted to the North Wiltshire Football League Championship and are replaced by the two teams which finished at the bottom of that division.

Similarly the two teams that finished at the bottom of the Swindon League are relegated to Swindon League Two.

In Swindon League Two, there are currently 16 teams which follow the same standard as the Swindon League. At the end of each season the top team, and the winner of the play-offs between the teams which finished in 2rd and 3rd positions, are promoted to the Swindon League and are replaced by the two teams which finished at the bottom of that division.

But there is no relegation in Swindon League Two.

On 1st April 1985, the Swindon League made a Declaration of Independence for the town of Swindon, with full secession from the UK. They gave an ultimatum to negotiate a "Treaty of Separation" with the government in Westminster, London by 1st May 1985.

Andrew Cosgrave, the chairman of the Swindon League, was announced as the first ever president of the Democratic Republic of Swindon.

On the 2nd of April, a new flag was designed for the "new" nation, featuring the colours of pink, purple and blue in a horizontal tricolour. Originally, in the center of the strip were located the letters DRS (Democratic Republic of Swindon) in green. They were later removed.

This was reported in the local paper The Link, but on the 3rd of April, the Swindon League commented that the announcement was just a joke (April Fool's Day) and the league had only wanted to make publicity so that everyone would know that the Swindon League had been formed and was ready to begin in August.
