[edit] News
- There is currently a dispute going on at Talk:Elena Paparizou on what nationality should be mentioned in the introduction, with some Greek people claiming that Paparizou (who was both born, raised and started her artistic career from Sweden) should be referred to as only "Greek" and not "Greek-Swedish". It would be good if as many people as possible could comment and give their view on the issue. /Slarre 22:34, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- Dagens Nyheter today featured an article (here) discussing the Wikipedia project, which has been added to Wikipedia:Press coverage along with a translated quote. Feel free to correct possible Swenglish in the translation. October 7, 2005.
[edit] Pages listed on Articles for Deletion
- User:Rory096 put the Invisible Party (Osynliga Partiet) up for speedy deletion. It certainly doesn't qualify as the entity has been discussed by the government, in hundreds of articles, and in many debates. It's been reported on outside Sweden and it has 87 300 googlehits. [1] -Dna4salE 06:41, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
- I put the article for John Hron up for a vote for deletion earlier this week. The discussion so far seems to indicate that he has some notability but editors so far have not improved the article beyond a stub. If he is notable enough, I ask that someone who might know more about the subject add to the article and save what could be a good article. If he's notable, I'd rather keep the article but right now as the article stands, the subject doesn't sound too notable to me. If this is the wrong place for this, sorry. It looked like this would be the place for this to go. Thanks, Dismas|(talk) 07:38, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Announcements
- Swedish government glossaries, from sweden.gov.se. They include descriptions of governmental and administrative functions in English. We may move them to /Terminology.
- A bit of statistics: In August, a total of 209 new Swedish-related articles were found and listed in the new articles list - an average of 6.8 articles a day. (Note that the figure includes a number of music albums by Swedish artists and other, erm, specialist topics.) 39 of the created articles had been previously listed as requests on this page. Many of them, however, are still rather short stubs. / Alarm 12:00, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
- The Swedish province articles were moved from Latin to Swedish names in May/June, e.g Ostrogothia --> Östergötland. If you see Latin provincial names, you are encouraged to change them, except in the case of Scania where both Skåne and Scania are OK forms. Arguments or comments can be presented at Talk:Skåne.
- We now have excellent coverage of the stone age. If anyone chances to be interested in these matters, s/he can read the articles on Kongemose culture, Fosna-Hensbacka culture, Nøstvet and Lihult cultures, Pitted Ware culture, Alvastra pile-dwelling, Ahrensburg culture, Bromme culture, Hamburg culture, Corded Ware culture, Funnelbeaker culture, Ertebølle culture, Maglemosian culture. 18 August 2005
[edit] Press
- If you are not active on Swedish Wikipedia you might not have caught the latest news [2]. Bad press from Aftonbladet and Expressen on our Prince Gustaf Adolf (talk) and Gustav V (talk). Read Expressen article.
- A recent review of Swedish Wikipedia was also made by Sydsvenska Dagbladet, August 19th 2006. It quoted discussions on Bybrunnen (the Village Pump), and it had interviewed three prominent editors. The article started off in a non-flattering way by comparing Wikipedia to a public toilet run by pedants, but it became nicer by the end. The article can be accessed, in Swedish, at [3].
[edit] Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(Swedish)
After the debate on WP:HOCKEY about respelling Swedish people not using swedish characters I wrote a comment at the village pump that User:Francis Schonken made into a policy proposal. Please review, edit and comment. Stefan 01:00, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
- A commendable initiative. But is it really necessary? I don't know. / Fred-Chess 17:25, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
-
- If you want the names of swedes to be spelled without ÅÄÖ since that is how they are spelled most of the time (does not matter what how you spell inside Sweden, since it is very small), then no, did you see the debate at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Ice_Hockey/Player_pages_format#non english diacritics and how they started moving e.g. Börje Salming to Borje Salming and so on, obviously this is not that importaint, but still as a Swede i think English wikipedia is for all people speaking English, not for North Americans only and therefore we should spell people with their right name and redirect for 'english' spelling. If you read current Wikipedia:Naming conventions you should spell in the way a majority of English speakers would most easily recognize the name and that is not using swedish character. Nevermind the proposal is up. Stefan 03:58, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Possible candidates for deletion
- Furbo , a village that does not establish notability. Fred-Chess 18:50, 22 September 2005 (UTC)
- Bjärv , a folk musical group
- Kristian Walker, Tsunami victim who posthumously was the center of a tabloid news story based on a rumour that soon turned out to be false. I'd say he's not notable, filing this under "Wikipedia is not a memorial" as per September 11 precedent, but I'd like to hear other's views before listing it. / Alarm 23:25, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
- Personally, I feel that this victim is perhaps a little more notable than other victims of the tsunami, due to the additional press coverage. I remember this case making headlines here in the UK, including BBC coverage. Also, I note that the tone of the entry isn't particularly gushing - sometimes, this type of article uses language such as "beautiful child", "innocent victim", "appalling tragedy", etc. However, on the other hand, I'm sure that many, many more of the victims of the tsunami had unique circumstances which people would say makes them notable, and many of them made headlines in their own right (although perhaps not to the same international extent), so I doubt that I would actively oppose a proposal for deletion. CLW 06:39, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
-
- I mostly oppose deletiions on AfD whenever I can find a reason, but must agree that it is hard to see this as notable. If you post it to AfD, I'll support deletion. Williamborg (Bill) 00:07, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
- Unique Party - I'm putting this up here as a reminder to delete it after the election if it turns out to be a hoax. -Obli (Talk)? 17:56, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Current Projects
- Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team - Sweden. Taking Sweden-related article to a stable status. Many articles are decent, but need major rewrite, supervision, or copyedit, in order to reach a 1.0 status. Work with Wikipedia:Swedish Wikipedians' notice board/Swedish quality articles. / Fred-Chess 09:46, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
- Wikireaders. After German influences, we have decided to initiate a English "WikiReader Sweden". This WikiReader should be able to be printed and published. The WikiReader is distributed as pdf files, and unlike wikipedia articles they extensively cover its subject: in our case Sweden. A first attempt WikiReader currently only including Stockholm, looks like this: Image:Stockholm Wikireader first draft.pdf. Comments and critique should be made at our talk page. // Fred-Chess 13:19, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
- Sweden's Municipalities
- Current status: Most municipalities have been improved. Remaining municipalites are: Municipalities of Östergötland County and Municipality of Uppsala County. Fred-Chess 20:26, 29 September 2005 (UTC)
