Swedish Royal Family

The Swedish Royal Family consists of a number of persons in the Swedish Royal House of Bernadotte, closely related to the King of Sweden, who are entitled to royal titles, and some of whom are performing various official engagements on behalf of the Royal Family and ceremonial duties of State. Currently the Royal Family has these members:
- The King and Queen:
- HM King Carl XVI Gustaf (since September 15, 1973). Born on April 30, 1946.
- HM Queen Silvia (since June 19, 1976). Born on December 23, 1943.
- Their children:
- HRH Crown Princess Victoria, Duchess of Västergötland. Born on July 14, 1977.
- HRH Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland. Born on May 13, 1979.
- HRH Princess Madeleine, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland. Born on June 10, 1982.
- The widow of the King's late uncle Prince Bertil:
- HRH Princess Lilian, Duchess of Halland. Born on August 30, 1915.
- The King's sister:
- HRH Princess Birgitta, Princess of Hohenzollern. Born on January 19, 1937.
Also the other sisters of the King are known as princesses, but they are referred to in a specific manner, and never actually called Princess of Sweden, nor styled Royal Highnesses. The reason for this is their marriage to non-royal persons, which was not permitted at the time. Whereas their male relatives in the same situation had been stripped of all royal titles (see Bernadotte af Wisborg), the case of the princesses was substantially different, as females were then not entitled to succession at all, and so they were allowed to keep the pre-nominal "Princess" as a mere honorific.
