Premkumar was the first son of Mr Swayamprakash, who worked as an exports control officer in Kerala. Premkumar did his schooling and under-graduate studies at St. Joseph's College, Bangalore, followed by an MBA. He was an avid debator and won laurels for the institutions of which he was a part.

Premkumar began his career with Shaw Wallace, following which he held senior managerial posts at Lakme cosmetics and Benkiser. His break came when he was appointed CEO of Benkiser India Ltd. His stint as CEO at Benkiser earned him plaudits from all around. He then went on to join Algro Ltd in Russia. He worked his way up there and became the CEO of Algro Ltd. In 2002, he bought over the company. His clientele have included the likes of SC Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline and Tetley among others. Under his leadership, Algro is progressing rapidly and moving towards launching its own brand VIZ, which include a large range of household products.
He also is the co-founder of Cis-link, an on-line trading forum.
He is married to Dr Rani Premkumar.
