Swash (Backwash), in geography, is the water that washes up on shore after an incoming wave has broken. This action will cause sand and other light particles to be transported up the beach. The direction of the swash varies with the prevailing wind, whereas the backwash is always perpendicular to the coastline. This may cause longshore drift. Swashing howeveris the act of a swash which can also be a whoosh of any liquid hurled at any object, eg. an elephant swashing water around like a trunk or i was just swashing my gun around like a trunk in UT. the term comes from when an old drunk frenchmen tried to say slosh when he spilled wine but said swash and the name stuck.
