Swalmen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Swalmen (pronunciation (help·info), Limburgish and town dialect: Zjwame) is a town in the southeastern Netherlands. The town is situated between the German border and the Meuse river (Maas in Dutch). It has a rich history, of which the originally Roman 'Rozenkerkje' church in Asselt is a silent witness.
Until January 1, 2007, Swalmen was a separate municipality, covering the villages Swalmen, Asselt and Boukoul. These are now part of the municipality of Roermond.
Many monuments are found in Swalmen, most notable the Hillenraad castle, and castle farms Graeterhof and Zuidewijk Spick. The area attracts tourists (mostly Germans) for its peaceful surroundings, asparagus, conference centre Landgoed Groenewoud and local swimming pool de Bosberg.
