Swallows Wood
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Swallows Wood is a nature reserve near Hollingworth, north Derbyshire. The site was formerly occupied by the Hollingworth and Waste Lodge reservoirs; these were demolished in 1987, and the nature reserve was installed in their place.[1] The 60 acre reserve, which contains semi-natural woodlands, meadows, ponds and marsh areas,[2] is owned by United Utilities who are responsible for its management.
The route of the proposed Longdendale Bypass will pass through the nature reserve and there is an on going campaign to save the wood [3] from its effects. Tameside Council has publicly committed to plant 10,000 managed trees, gradually moving the woodland away from the bypass route. [4]
The area is named after former land owner John Swallow[citation needed].
