[edit] History

In mid-1996, the Court Liberal government privatised Transperth's bus and information operations. These were previously undertaken by a state-owned operator, Metrobus. Planning, management and infrastructure control was maintained by Transperth (and later assumed by the Public Transport Authority upon its creation in 2003), while the new private operators would hire drivers and manage the buses and depots within their regions.

Perth was divided into several regions, and Swan Transit won the tender to operate two of the regions. Over the following years, some providers did better than others, and Swan in some cases acquired other operators and in other cases won new tenders, taking over an increasing number of bus routes.

[edit] Present operations

It is now the dominant carrier for daily road transit service in Western Australia, operating services in the inner southern, inner western, south-eastern and eastern suburbs of Perth, as well as the Circleroute service through other suburbs. Swan also interacts with commuter rail and carpool agencies.

Other services, including the northern and outer southern suburbs and the Perth CAT, are operated by Path Transit and Southern Coast Transit.

[edit] sWAn Transit Riverside

One of sWAn transit's contracts was allocated to a division called sWAn transit Riverside. It covers the areas near the Swan River, from Belmont to Fremantle. Bus services in this contract area were previously operated by Perth Bus (CGEA Group - later Connex Perth). sWAn transit Riverside has now merged with sWAn transit's main operations.
