Suzuki GSX-R1100
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The GSX-R1100 was a sport bike from Suzuki's GSX-R series of motorcycles. It was introduced in 1986.
1986 models weighed 197 kg dry, had a 4 cylinder 16 valve dohc air and oil cooled motor that employed a clever set of oil jets to avoid the need for water cooling. Power output was about 115 horsepower at the rear wheel in stock trim. 18-inch wheels were fitted front and rear, with monoshock rear suspension and anti-dive equipped forks in front. A square section perimeter frame was used.
The 1989 model introduced a new frame and a modified 1127 cc engine. The new frame was similar to that of the 1988 GSX-R750. Rear suspension was monoshock as before but used a different linkage system to the earlier models. Weight was up to about 210 kg; power output up to 125 hp at the rear wheel.[citation needed]
Models changed with minor modifications until 1994 when the 1074 cc water cooled GSX-R1100 was introduced. The frame was much like the post-1989 GSX-R1100s but the engine was radically different. Power output was up again, to about 135 hp at the rear wheel.[citation needed]
The GSX-R1100 was discontinued in 1998.
The bike is a tuner's favourite - all versions respond well to tuning and even early models can make 140 hp at the wheel with relative ease. Simple intake modifications and a good exhaust will yield upwards of 10 horsepower increase. More enthusiastic tuning will see 160 horsepower or more, and many drag racers use superchargers or turbochargers with this motor to break the 500 hp mark.[citation needed]
A modified version of this motor is still used in the Bandit 1200 motorcycle.
