For soldiers with money (probably during the Civil War), hunger pangs could be soothed by a visit to the sutler wagon. Though not military, sutler wagons followed behind the troops and were packed with supplies and goods. Prices were frequently doubled or tripled above average. i.e. A dozen eggs could cost $6, which is expensive today but was a fortune back then.
