Surrey Hills is a railway station on the Lilydale and Belgrave lines in Melbourne, Australia. It is located in Metcard ticketing Zones 1 and 2 and was upgraded to a Premium Station in 2000. In peak periods, many trains to and from Belgrave and Lilydale do not stop at this station. Access to the platforms is gained by an underpass. Platform 3 is used for local service trains during peak hour as the line running along platform 2 is for express trains which don't stop between Box Hill and Camberwell.
Surrey Hills is the site of the first level crossing encountered on the eastbound leg of the Belgrave and Lilydale lines.
[edit] History
The railway line to Lilydale was opened in December 1882. Two trains ran to Lilydale each day and five only to Box Hill. Engineers were initially unwilling to allow trains to stop at Surrey Hills platform claiming potential difficulties with the gradient, and also that there was not enough traffic to warrant the stop.
In April 1883 a deputation asked for Surrey Hills to be a flag station so that passengers wishing to detrain could inform the guard of this at the previous station, while those wishing to join the train could show a red flag or a red lamp at night.
By August 1883 trains would stop on request. On September 1, 1883 Surrey Hills station was brought into regular service.
Surrey Hills station first appeared in the Victorian Railways Working Timetable on October 15, 1883.
The double line came into use on December 9, 1888 when a second platform was provided on the north side of the line.
