Surma (woreda)

Surma is one of the 77 woredas in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Region of Ethiopia. It is named for the Surma people, whose homeland lies in the southern part of the woreda; a diiferent ethnic group the Kichepo live in the northern part.

Part of the Bench Maji Zone, Surma is bordered on the south and west by Sudan, on the north by Sheko, and on the east by Dizi. Information is lacking on the towns and cities of this woreda.

Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 33,488, of whom 15,286 were males and 18,202 were females. With an estimated area of 4,883.13 square kilometers, Surma has an estimated population density of 6.9 people per square kilometer, which is less than the Zone average of 20.[1]
