Suri (Pashtun)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Suri are a Pashtun tribe. One theory about them is that the Suri Pakhtun were people brought from Syria by the son of Seljuks prince. The Suris and Nuhanis are descended from Ismail's (the son of Ibrahim Lodhi) two sons Sur and Nuh. Historically this seems inaccurate as Suri the lord of merv is mentioned in Firdawsi's Shahnamah who killed the last Persian King after his defeat in Iraq. This is further rebutted by the history of the suris of Punjab who are said to have migrated from Khurasan (including Merv) and were there at the time of Alexander the Great.

Suri are a part of the Kukhran clan from the Punjab and living in both India and Pakistan . The Kukhran are an ancient Aryan Khatri clan of West Punjab who are predominantly Hindus and Sikhs however there are also a section of Muslim Kukhran . Kukhrans consist of the following sub clans . Anand, Bhasin, Chadha, Chandok (Chandhoke, Chandhok, Chandiok), Gandhoke (Gadhok, Gadhoke, Gadok), Ghai, Kohli ,Sabbarwal, Sahni/Sawhney, Sethi, Suri and Chachi, a sub-clan of the Kohli tribe
