- The message above was in response to your addition to List of people by name: Mi of
- Mit
- Mitterrand, François (1981-1995), French president
in spite of of the clear message there reading
- This is an Index-Only Page
- This page is intended only to provide access to other pages. It does not, and is never intended to, include any content of its own. Please select one of the links in the index above to reach the information you seek.
In fact, in order to make that edit you added markup directly after the following "comment" markup:
- <!--
- This comment exists to keep this permanently short page (like others that should never include names, within the tree whose root is
- List of people by name
- ) from appearing on the shortest-articles page: otherwise these pages would obscure the pages there that probably can be expanded soon or deleted. This comment can be removed, if the design of this page ever changes to result in a sufficient length of source text.
- -->
The reason for messages like the one i left you above is two-fold:
- To be sure new editors who make bad edits as a result of misunderstandings have help in straightening out those misunderstandings, and becoming useful members of the Wikipedia community.
- To keep a record of the occasions when any particular new editor has elicited such messages, as an aid to ruling out patterns of vandalism (or identifying them, and in due time taking steps to interrupt such patterns -- with or without the perpetrator's cooperation, as the situation requires).
In your case, the Mitterrand edit raises the likelihood of more than simple misunderstanding: an element of what i describe as reckless editing, of making an edit that you knew, or should have known, was counterproductive. Many editors would have avoided that edit by looking around the LoPbN tree a little further than perhaps you did, and deducing that the proper place to seek (or add) a Mitterrand entry would be List of people by name: Mitd-Mitz, where one has in fact resided for several months. (In fact, after a bit of research i can tell you that an entry for him has existed for just under 47 months, moving from page to page deeper into the tree, as the Mi names have become more numerous, in order to make accessible something on the order of 100,000 entries.) Your edit can easily be forgivable, in light of our policy of encouraging editing "boldly", but i must ask you to forgo obscuring the record, even by prematurely archiving your talk page (let alone by blanking it), while you build up a record of helpful edits that, for example, leads an experienced editor to comment on how well you've eventually developed a record as an editor who recognizably balances boldness and care -- a time i look forward to.
