The Supreme Novices' Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle race in the United Kingdom for four-year-old and above novices run over a distance of 2 miles 110 yards (3,319 metres) on the Old Course at Cheltenham Racecourse during the Cheltenham Festival in March. There are eight hurdles to be jumped in the race.
It is traditionally the first race at the Cheltenham Festival, and the race was known until 1974 as the Gloucestershire Hurdle. Prior to 1972 the race was split into separate divisions, usually two, but in both 1946 and 1963 there were three races. As the race is the first one of the four day Cheltenham festival, the start of the race is traditionally greeted by the Cheltenham roar which signifies the beginning of the festivities.
[edit] Trivia
- 1964 winner Flyingbolt won the 1965 Cotswold Chase, 1966 Queen Mother Champion Chase and Irish Grand National. He was just about the only horse to be officially rated nearly comparable to his stablemate Arkle (after whom the Cotswold Chase is now named).
- 1968 winner L'Escargot won the 1970 and 1971 Cheltenham Gold Cup and the 1975 Grand National (the third of his National battles with Red Rum).
- 1970 winner Bula went on to win the 1971 and 1972 Champion Hurdle. 1999 winner Hors La Loi III did the same in 2002 and 2004 winner Brave Inca did the same in 2006.
- 1978 winner Golden Cygnet won by about 15 lengths. The next month he was crusing coming to the last hurdle in the Scottish Champion Hurdle against Sea Pigeon. Sadly, Golden Cygnet fell fatally.
- 1983 winner Buck House won the 1986 Queen Mother Champion Chase.
- 1993 winner Montelado had now won two successive races at the Cheltenham Festival. He'd won the 1992 Champion Bumper which was at the time the final race of the Festival.
- 2007 winner Ebaziyan was formerly trained on the flat by John Oxx, and was bred by the Aga Khan IV.
