Supré
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Supré (Pronounced Supray) is a teen fashion retail business with over 150 stores around Australia and New Zealand plus on on-line presence with a shopping facility for those not living close to a store.
The Supre label was founded in 1984 by Hans and Helen van der Meulen. It is a Tertiary Industry business focusing on supplying reasonably priced clothing styled in the latest trends through their stores and their website. Supré stores are well known for their use of loud dance music (usually remixes of popular songs) instore, and some have, at times, even had professional DJs instore. With the opening of the newest store in the Darwin CBD in March 2007, Supré now has a flagship city store in each State and Territory of Australia. The Melbourne City store is spread over 2 levels, whilst the Sydney store manages to be spread over more than 4 levels in the old Gowings department store building.
Originally, Supré sold clothes appropriate for all age groups, and had a much wider range of clothing, comparable to that of a discount department store such as Target. In the mid-nineties, they began focusing on teen girls and young women, and since then the average age of customers has been seen to be decreasing. In more recent years, the clothing has become more focused on the latest fashions and less on the types of clothing that people considered to be "sluttish", such as the many black T-shirts bearing negative or derogatory slogans, many of which promoted narcissism or promiscuity, for example "smoke to be thin"[1]. Supré has also tried to incorporate punk fashion elements into their clothing.
Their seasons differ greatly, with many different styles of clothing being sold in the store. The staff are mainly young females but recently males have also been brought in.
Currently there is a Supre headband that comes in many different colours - which is branded as 'cool' as most of the girls at schools, both primary and high. Nowadays, many young girls go into Supre, trying on boob tubes and mini skirts - which some say are not suitable for their age.
Recently Supré have shown responsible articles on their company web site talking about eating disorders and healthy living, with links to support agencies.
