[edit] Synopsis
This episode opens with Jake Long skating and impressing his schoolmates around him. He does an amazing trick by skating over a table, until a challenger named Nigel Thrall, comes in and really stirs up the crowd. He skates over a lunch bag and incredibly slices the lunch such as the pizza in the bag. Therefore, Jake and Nigel freestyle to see who’s #1. Jake starts out with a good rap and the crowd goes wild, but when Nigel freestyles, the crowd loves him even more and cheers louder. Enviously, Jake feels showed up and then it cuts to the theme song.
In the lunch room, Jake feels out-skated, out-rapped, and out-classed. Elections are coming up and Jake can’t help feeling down. Spud thinks Jake should beat Nigel at something he is into. Trixie is serious about school elections, but Jakes states “…who care’s about the elections,” until, Nigel politely announces that he’s running for president. This gives Jake a chance to beat Nigel, so Jake also runs for president.
After school, Lao Shi, Jake’s grandpa and Dragon Master, is competing with another electronic store called “Boomgarden Electronics.” While cleaning up grandpa’s shop with Fu Dog, Jake discovers “the Helmet of Truth.” The Helmet of Truth protects one’s head in contact sport and let’s you hear peoples thoughts. The helmet used to belong to an ogre named Maximinus. Maximinus was invincible gladiator who anticipated his opponents’ movement with the helmet. Eventually, he started picking on fights outside the arena and the council confiscated his helmet. So, Jake decided to try the helmet on and started to read Trixie and Spud’s minds. Meanwhile, Lao Shi walks in and discovers that Jake is running for president. He states that such competition is unwise. But Jake points out Lao Shi’s enemy, Boomgarden Electronics. In a Boomgarden Electronics commercial, the owner mocks Lao Shi’s store and sales in electronics while telling consumers to go to Boomgarden Electronics. The owner of Boomgarden’s offers so much more than Lao Shi’s store. As a result, Lao Shi gets angry and kicks the television, therefore turning it off.
The next day, while at school, Jake, Trixie, and Spud try to get voters on their side. Trixie believes Jake needs a platform. She has ideas on how to improve the school. Spud thinks Jake should change the school’s fight song, “Hail the conquering Spartan’s” into a little more honest song. Suddenly, Nigel walks in with a band playing music behind his back. While marching, Nigel throws out t-shirts so people could vote for him. Jake becomes extremely angry and draws a crowd towards Nigel when he yells, “…you think you can get votes by giving out free t-shirts!” Later in the day, Jake feels he has lost the voters and unexpectedly sees his best friend Spud wearing a “Vote for Nigel” tracksuit. So Jake tells Spud to take it off and goes to return the clothing back to Nigel. Trixie thinks Jake should just forget about Nigel and reminds him of his gift of having magical dragon powers. Jake, Trixie, and Spud soon arrive at Nigel’s campaign headquarters room. Jake uses his dragon powers to open the door and shockingly witness Nigel Thrall performing sorcery.
While confronting Nigel, Jake believes Nigel has been using magic to win the election. Jake asks why Nigel is here in the first place. Nigel states he’s here to complete his training. So, Jake and Nigel decide to compete in a magical challenge for the election. They both humiliate each other such as Jake breathing fire on Nigel’s chair and Nigel using magic to tell everyone Jake does not bathe. Later, Spud reveals the latest poll results. 80% say they rather have Nigel as president, while 20% say they rather have Jake as president. Trixie eagerly tells Jake to take a stand on an important issue that will get the voters attention. But caught up in the attention, Jake disregards Trixie’s statement and says it’s about beating Nigel. So Jake wants to figure out what the voters care about. Meanwhile, back at Lao Shi’s shop, Jake’s grandpa makes a commercial in order to get customers to come to his store. But Fu Dog thinks Lao Shi should smile at the camera. While Trixie and Spud are hanging out with Jake, Jake tries on the “Helmet of Truth” at the shop.
At school the following day, Jake wears Spartan attire while wearing the “Helmet of Truth.” He uses the helmet to hear what the voters are thinking. He gets there attention and more kids start to change their mind and vote for Jake. Nigel comes and asks what Jake’s secret is while admiring his helmet. Then Nigel tells Jake to enjoy his popularity while it lasts because he has magic that could even blow his doors off. After school, Trixie, Spud, and Jake notice that Lao Shi’s shop is trashed. Fu Dog reveals that he was with Lao Shi when they came back and saw his shop in a wreck. Lao Shi believes Boomgarden destroyed his shop and angrily starts talking in Chinese. Fu Dog thinks this is something no ordinary human would do. Jake agrees and starts thinking that Nigel is responsible for ruining his grandpa’s shop.
So the next day at school, Jake goes up to Nigel. Nigel says he did not do anything to hurt his grandpa’s shop, but Jake is skeptical. Meanwhile, Professor Rotwood announces the candidates for the school election, Jake and Nigel. But Jake and Nigel do not come out, so Trixie and Spud come on the stage to talk about real issues going on in the school that need to be dealt with. Anyway, Jake uses the “Helmet of Truth” on Nigel and finds out he was telling the truth all along. Jake still wonders who did it, until; he hears a loud thrashing sound. So, Jake and Nigel go outside and see the ogre called Maximinus wanting to take back his helmet. Nigel and Jake still compete when defeating Maximinus. Therefore, Jake calls his grandpa and tells him the situation he is in and asks how to defeat Maximinus. Lao Shi says that Jake awakened Maximinus by occasionally using the helmet to read peoples’ minds. Jake realizes it was Maximinus who trashed his grandpa’s shop while looking for the helmet. Fu Dog tells Jake that in order to take down Maximinus, he must work together with Nigel. Lao Shi warns Jake not to let Maximinus get the helmet. But caught off guard, the helmet easily rolls toward Maximinus and he puts it on. So Maximinus uses the helmet to his advantage and reads Jake and Nigel thoughts. Maximinus ties up Jake and Nigel while climbing a building. Confusingly, Jake asks why Maximinus is still fighting them. Nigel explains that he is a gladiator who has an oath to fight to the death. Maximinus sharpens his powerful sword and Jake tells Nigel to use magic to hit the fire alarm. Knowing that Nigel and Jake are ineffective, Maximinus tells Nigel to go ahead and alert school. Maximinus doubts students will save them. When the alarm is pull down by the use of Nigel’s magic, the students come out and start talking and thinking at the same time. Since Maximinus is picking up every thought, he throws away the helmet. Jake and Nigel escape and defeat the formidable Maximinus.
After the battle, Jake and Nigel still compete on winning the election. Professor Rotwood is shocked that there is a tie when announcing who the voters chose as class president. Confidently, Jake and Nigel stand up to become congratulated, but surprisingly hears that Trixie and Spud won the election. After school, while helping his grandpa, Jake tells his grandpa that Trixie and Spud won because they had real ideas and admits that all he done with Nigel is tear him down. Lao Shi then tells Jake he has learned that grudges are a waste of time and decides to end his childish feud with Boomgarden .....starting tomorrow.
