Pitta superba Rothschild & Hartert, 1914 |
The Superb Pitta, Pitta superba is a handsome and large pitta, up to 22cm long, that is endemic to the Manus Island, Papua New Guinea. The plumage is black with turquoise blue wing, scarlet belly and green tipped secondaries. Both sexes are similar, with female slightly smaller and duller than male.
As with other pittas, it is a secretive and rarely seen terrestrial bird. The diet consists mainly of snails.
Due to ongoing habitat lost on this restricted range species gives the Superb Pitta its Vulnerable status on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
