[edit] Overview
Super Mario Bros. games are two dimensional platformers. In the games, the player usually kills enemies by jumping on them. Powerups such as fire flowers and super mushrooms powerup the player by allowing them to throw fireballs and grow big.
The most common theme in the games is Bowser, the main antagonist of the series, kidnapping Princess Peach, whom Mario must save.
The game's levels are divided into different worlds, each with a certain number of stages. New Super Mario Bros. introduced bonus levels to each world.
[edit] Games
- Super Mario Bros. (1985)
- Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (1986)
- Super Mario Bros. 2 (1988)
- Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990)
- Super Mario World (1991)
- New Super Mario Bros. (2006)
Although it was the third and second game, respectively, to feature Mario and Luigi, Super Mario Bros. is the first game to use Super Mario Bros. in the title and the first in the series. This game was a pack-in with the Nintendo Entertainment System. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is the first sequel to Super Mario Bros. This was only released in Japan, and was not available in Europe or the U.S. until 1993's compilation Super Mario All-Stars.
The American/European Super Mario Bros. 2 features a very different aspect of play than its predecessor, and was originally a separate game called Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. It is also the first playable appearance of Toad and Princess Peach. Super Mario Bros. 3 is, as regarded by many, supposedly the best game of the series. It is the first game of the series to feature board maps.
Super Mario World is the first and, so far, only game that uses level names, though named with the world name and a number (such as Yoshi's Island 3 or Donut Plains 4). It is the first game to feature Yoshi. Though not bearing the Super Mario Bros. name, in Japan it is sometimes titled Super Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World.
New Super Mario Bros. is the only game of the series released for a handheld console, the Nintendo DS, not counting handheld remakes of the other games of the series. The game combines 3D graphics and 2D gameplay.
