[edit] Story Mode Basic Plot (Spoilers)
The story starts with a basic movie like opening then the scene focuses on the hero joining a wrestling school (presumably run by Kotetsu Yamamoto.) The hero wrestles opponents as part of his evaluation and in-ring development. Later on the hero can choose either Sting, The Undertaker, or Ravishing Rick Rude as his American mentor. After graduating (by beating Yamamoto) the player then gets to choose to join one of the 3 major promotions in the game: View Japan (New Japan Pro Wrestling), Olive Japan (All Japan Pro Wrestling), or UWH (UWF International).
No matter which promotion you choose it all builds up to winning the title of your promotion and having a fight with Akira Maeda. Maeda at this point of the game is unbeatable and cannot be submitted or pinned.
During or after this time, the hero will develop a sexual relationship with Maeda's fictional sister, and then he would travel to the USA to train with Karl Gotch to improve his wrestling skills.
In a dramatic twist the hero gets an offer to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and the hero would fight on to become a UFC champion. After his success in MMA the hero would return to Pro Wrestling. Meanwhile his relationship with Maeda's sister shows signs of trouble.
During his wrestling comeback Maeda's sister would break up with the hero and the hero is left alone with only his American mentor.
In the finale the hero would fight in a wrestling supershow in front of 100,000 fans, his American mentor would also join. However tragedy strikes as the hero's American mentor would be murdered in the ring by Ric Flair. The hero would then fight Flair with a heavy heart due to not only being dumped, but losing his mentor. When you beat Flair the hero would face Akira Maeda for the championship. The hero would beat Maeda, with Maeda's sister (the hero's ex lover) watching on with sadness. The hero became the champion of the world but he was visably depressed. He expresses that his victories were hollow due to losing the love of his life and his mentor. The final scene would show a nice mansion, a nice car in beautiful, perfect weather, birds were singing in the air...Then a single gunshot would ring through the air as the hero committed suicide. The credits roll...
