Talk:Sunriver Resort
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] Purpose of article
This is a commercial enterprise. Sunriver Resort is a corporation owned by Destinations Resorts. There is a Sunriver resort community (Sunriver, Oregon), and there is Sunriver Resort, the corporation. People consider them synonymous, but they're not, and this entry should be removed.
There are a dozen property management and vacation rentals companies here as well as other businesses and shops, and every one of the companies listed in this entry are wholly owned by Sunriver Resort and are not independent companies. Orty 22:44, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- I added a link to Sunriver, Oregon, which already has an article. I also put the article up for proposed deletion. I suspect this will be contested, so I will put it up for afd if necessary. There is not necessarily anything wrong with a Wikipedia article about a commercial enterprise, however, it depends on how it is written. This article, if it stays, needs a complete rewrite. I have rewritten the article and removed the deletion template. I don’t agree that it should be deleted. Eswiki 20:21, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- Eswiki, are you by any chance associated with the resort? Please take a look at our guidelines about conflict of interest. Thanks. Katr67 22:35, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- Orty, I cleaned up the article, see what you think. Katr67 22:35, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

- Up front: I work for two of Sunriver Resort's competitors, so we're clear on that. You will never see any of the two companies I work for on Wikipedia as this is not a place for that. Again, I still vote for deletion of this article. The "The Resort" subheading, for example: "Sunriver Resort offers a variety of accommodations, including luxury guest rooms and suites, as well as 400 fully furnished luxury vacation rental properties. It has five dining areas located throughout the property, three tennis facilities, family recreation, and is home to the Sage Springs Club and Spa. Sunriver Resort is home to the largest resort conference center in the Northwest.[citation needed] The resort has over 44,600 square feet of flexible meeting and banquet space." All those things are things that only Sunriver Resort (corp) and their guests have access to. Same thing with the golf courses. Crosswater is a private course and the other two, while public, are more expensive if you don't stay with them. They're also not the only vacation rental company out here -- there are over 1000 rental homes in the area that are managed either by vacation rental companies or private homeowners. Sunriver Resort has quite a few of them, but Sunriver Vacations has just as many (disclaimer: I do occassional IT work for them as well). So either we list all the larger companies, or not at all.

- I vote to move relevate information from this article to the Sunriver, Oregon, page, and remove this one. A lodging section in the Sunriver, Oregon, page might be appropriate, and I can provide you with the 8 largest companies out here for that page, if need be. Orty 17:41, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

- Be BOLD! The way to "vote" is to go ahead and list this article for deletion and see what the consensus is. I think it will be an interesting debate. Your changes sound reasonable, though a listing of the rental companies may not be particularly encyclopedic (this is an unusual situation, however, since the community itself is a sort of commercial enterprise). I think the resort is somewhat notable because of its effect on the local economy (according to the Bend article, it's one of Bend's top employers), so perhaps a redirect to Sunriver and the inclusion of additional information is in order. - I don't understand why this is up for deletion. The original posting sounds as if a certain competitor, worried of having some fire stolen, is looking to take down a perfectly viable page about a resort. The Sunriver Community and the Sunriver Resort are two completely different enterprises. If anything I feel the Sunriver, Oregon should be changed to Sunriver Community, Sunriver Private Community, Sunriver New Town, or any assortment of other labels which would clear up the distinction of what the property entails. Currently when I see Sunriver, Oregon I am thinking of geographical information and population stats, not a private community. Sunriver Resort offers up relevant information to a hospitality location in Oregeon and the name is not confusing in the slightest. Spiderkeg 15:03, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

- It's not up for deletion right now. (The prod was contested, just I thought it would be.) But I suggested putting it up for deletion if those who are concerned about it want to go that route. I suspect that the original editor is connected with this enterprise, which is a conflict of interest. Before cleanup, it really read like an ad--take a look at the page history. That is why the original poster was concerned. With good reason, though like I say above, I think the resort is probably notable enough to have an article. So despite the fact the above poster is a competitor, at least s/he offered full disclosure. Also note that s/he hasn't even touched the article.

- In turn, I don't see anything confusing about "Sunriver, Oregon"--that is the established naming convention for a settlement, whether it be a new town or whatever. I think that is the most likely thing people will search for. If further clarification is needed in both articles, with well-cited sources, please someone do so. I don't have any particular interest in the matter except to keep out the advertising and linkspam. Right now the article is borderline advertising and still needs cleanup. If I can figure out which WikiProject or village pump discussion would be appropriate to ask, I'll try to get a third (fourth, fifth?) opinion. Katr67 15:31, 7 February 2007 (UTC) P.S. I'll go ahead and see if anybody at WikiProject Oregon has any ideas. Katr67 15:32, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

- First and foremost I’m not associated with the resort. I wrote the article to highlight a specific entity in Sunriver, Oregon, Sunriver Resort the corporation. I felt it needed its own article being that it’s apart from the Sunriver community. I also wrote the article to highlight what properties in Sunriver is owned by the resort. Sunriver resort is a huge part of the area; they are not just a rental company. They own and operate the bulk of what’s there. i.e. The lodge, the golf courses, vacation rentals, a hand full of restaurants etc. Yes only Sunriver (corp.) and their guest have access, yet the more reason to have a Sunriver Resort entry highlighting that fact. I’m glad that some feel Sunriver Resort is notable enough to have an article; however I extremely edited the entry from what I originally posted because some felt it read like an ad. I was just merely stating what the resort owns and operates.Eswiki 16:22, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] topic confusion
I'm confused by the terminology. Are there two or three entities: Sunriver, Oregon is definitely one—the community. Sunriver Resort I assume is the historical corporate entity covered by this article. Does that include the present Resort at Sunriver? Or is that a separate topic? FWIW, I've spent much time there, flying in from time to time, rented 3-4 houses for 15 years as organizer of my company's annual ski trip, etc. —EncMstr 18:01, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- If you are asking whether Sunriver Resort and the Resort at Sunriver are synonomous, one in the same, then I believe they are. Looks like Sunriver Resort offers lodges and vacation rentals, so I can only assume this is the place which you remember. Check out the actual website from the article for clarification, and feel free to add more if this will help. Spiderkeg 15:25, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

- I guess my question was a bit vague because I've sensed some subtlety of the entities. My impression is that the term "Sunriver" might refer to any of several, closely related, entities:
- the entire community, land, river, etc.
- the bit of the Deschutes River going past
- the hotel and conference operation known as Sunriver Lodge and Sunriver Lodge Village, which also manages and rents many condos and houses (though there more than a dozen other businesses which do too)
- the Sunriver Village Mall, a collection of shops and restaurants
- the airport at Sunriver, also known to aviators as S21, which is owned by "Sunriver Resort, L.P." [1]
- Sunriver Resort, which includes the golf courses and streets near the village, common areas such as the amphitheater and bike paths, and apparently the airport, etc.
