[edit] History
According to Sunrise Senior Living, Paul and Terry Klaassen, the company's founders, each had family experiences with long term care while growing up. Terry and her family experienced the institutional nature of nursing homes in the United States, while Paul visited his grandparents, who lived in home-like and comfortable accommodations in Holland. After the couple married, they volunteered in nursing homes, and saw many seniors who did not need institutionalized care of a nursing home.
The young couple chose to import the Dutch model of long-term care to the U.S. They sold their house, then moved into and renovated a closed nursing home. In the first year of business, Paul and Terry cared for the residents themselves. Word spread of this new senior care alternative, which ultimately became known as assisted living. [1]
In response to the increasing demand, the Klaassens opened two more Sunrise communities in the mid 1980s. In 1987, Sunrise opened the first of their Victorian-style mansions. This was one of the first custom built assisted living communities in the United States.
In the spring of 2003, Sunrise Assisted Living changed its name to Sunrise Senior Living to highlight the broader scope of services and programs designed to meet the specific needs of seniors. Sunrise offers independent living, home care, assisted living, Alzheimer's care, skilled nursing and hospice care. Sunrise currently operates in 40 US states, Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany.
While Sunrise has continue to grow, there has been concerns and issues regarding management. The company has had to restate several years of earning and many of the top executives have been under investigation related to allegations that they imporperly sold off large amounts of stock right before Sunrise reported it was going to need to restate its earnings. Also, Sunrise has had to deal with many accusations from residents and their families that their care of senior citizens is inadequate.[citation needed]
