Sunrise Mall is a mall in Corpus Christi, Texas. The mall is located in Nueces County at the intersection of Staples Street & South Padre Island Drive (SPID) SH 358.The mall is considered "dead" by some, as many stores have left. Anchoring Sunrise Mall are Burlington Coat Factory, Stein Mart, and Sears; in addition, the mall features a food court half dead and a movie theater Dollar Cinema. This Mall was one of the Best Malls in Nueces County back in the 1990s. Sunrise Mall was home to many long going Department Stores like Montgomery Ward, and Mervyn's. Sunrise Mall was the place to hang with you friends back in the 1990s. Montgomery Ward was the best store in the mall out of all the other 3 anchors there. The Dollar Cinema brought lots of money into the mall as a whole because, the movie was only $1, and then after the movie, lots of people would shop around at Sunrise Mall. The Security at the mall was a lot better than it is today at the mall due to the time period, and location. Sun Rise Mall itself was unique to all the other malls because it had a water fall and wishing spout pond. The market of investment at Sunrise Mall was at a greater standpoint in the early to mid 1990s. Sun Rise Mall stores had it made as shoppers would shop and one store, then shop at another one. Sunrise Mall remained a steady growing mall up until 2000 with the loss of Montgomery Ward. Numerous Gaming Stores brought lots of attention for younger kids to Sunrise Mall including Sears and Montgomery Ward. Numerous hair salons which are currently there also brought lots of attention to the Sunrise Mall and numerous stores there. Eye & Dental professionals filled the mall and brought in the money for the mall and its dependents.

The Food Court consisted of a Chick-Fil-A, Wendys, A Hot Dog Stand, A Pizzeria, Chinese Food, A Ice Cream Shop, A Smoothie Shop, A Grill & Bar Restaurant, and Joe's Mexican Restaurant, and Cookie Co. The inner mall stores from the 1990s to the 2000s were Dozens of Shoe Stores like Foot Locker, Dozens of Jewelry Stores like Zales, Artifact Stores, Gameing Stores, Eye Care Specialist & Eye Care Shop's, Oshman's, A Train Store, Movie Stores, Clotheing Stores, Hair Salons, Pet Care Stores, Dollar Cinema, and lots of Arcades. There were many other types of stores as well.
[edit] Best Steady Years 1990-1999
After the Year 1989, the mall had pretty much filled itself to the rim with stores and anchors. The reason why from 1990-1999 were considered the Best and Steady Years is because, for a period of time "10 years" no stores had moved out or closed down. The Sunrise Mall was the place to hang out back in the 1990s. People filled the mall and not one thing was wrong with the mall. The mall was complete and was set in the direction for further expansion. Montgomery Ward, Mervyn's, Burlington, Sears, and Stein Mart were at their greatest peak in the market in 1990. The Dollar Cinema also attracted more people to the Sun Rise mall and to the surrounding areas of Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1991, the mall opened up a water fall/ wishing spout pond in the Mall as a sense of more attraction to the mall. Of course, this worked as all things at the mall were cool, and to the groove 1990. In 1993, Oshmans came in and took about 6 stores in the mall to make it the largest sports store in the mall. Oshmans was a go getter for sports players and professional sports players in the area. In 1994, an extra parking garage was added to host more cars, and allow a good amount of parking in the mall. 1995, was above all years, the best one at Sunrise Mall because, about 3,000 people a day, especially on weekends would take a visit to the Growing Sunrise mall and buy. Sunrise Mall was at its Largest Peak it ever could have been in 1995. In 1996, the mall still attracted thousands of people, and recorded the mall had its Fiscal years from 1995 to 1996. In 1997, Sunrise Mall was concentrating on possible expansion of the mall to make more room for the constant buyers of the Mall. 1997, was also another good fiscal year for Sunrise Mall and surrounding malls like Padre Staples Mall. The Food court as good as it was in the 1990s attracted many people and also helped out the Dollar Cinema. The Food Court was always filled with people to the rim as was the whole mall up until the early 2000s.
Of course in 1997 Montgomery Ward filed for chapter 11 Banckruptcy and was experiencing difficulties in the different parts of the US. Montgomery Ward lasted in Corpus Christi, Texas until Feb 2000. The Year 2000 was the beginning of SunRise Mall decreasing in Size and in shopping amounts.
[edit] Downfall Of The 2000s
Though with the closing of Montgomery Ward completely in 2000, Sun Rise Mall continued to do well through the Mid 2000s. Through the years 2001-2004, The Sunrise Mall closed about half of the store population in had back in the 1990s. The Stores that closed were Oshmans, KB Toys, Clothing Stores, Music & Movie Stores, Radio Shack, Foot Locker, Eye Care Specialist, half of the Food court closed due to the fact of the decrease in shoppers, and many computer electronic stores had shut down.
From 2005-2007 the mall has even decreased in the number of Anchors and Stores. Mervyn's ceased operations in Corpus Christi, Texas in the Spring of 2006. Most of the clothing stores have shut down as have most of the Shoe stores. Today, Sears, Burlington, and Stein Mart are the Anchors of the Mall with 2 anchors shut down and with 10 out of 40 store spaces filled and open in the Dead Sunrise Mall.
Little did the people of Corpus Christi, Texas know that Sunrise Mall would become what it is today. Once the Best filled mall in Nueces County, now the quiet mall of dark store spaces and about 200 out of 1,500 people shopping there on a daily basis.
