Sunderland Point, Lancashire

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sunderland Point, Lancashire, is a small community in Morecambe Bay near the villages of Overton and Middleton. It is cut off by the tide twice every day and tide timetables should be checked before driving there. There is no pub on Sunderland Point but there are pubs close by at Overton.

It is a windswept peninsula with extensive views across Morecambe Bay and across the Lune Estuary. It was used as a port for slave ships and cotton ships but its importance declined as other ports such as Lancaster were opened up.

One interesting feature is Sambo's grave. This is the grave of a young black servant from one of the ships. He died on Sunderland Point in the old brewery, which still stands on the corner of the pathway that leads to his lonely grave. Tended to this day by the local children living on Sunderland Point, fresh flowers are usually found on his grave.
