Sunbeam 1000 hp

The Sunbeam "Slug" 1000 hp is an aero-engined car built by the Sunbeam Car Company. Designed by Captain Jack Irving, it had unique features such as all-enveloping bodywork that assisted aerodynamics. The car also had specially-made tires capable of withstanding velocities of 200 mph and two aircraft engines, a pair of Sunbeam Matabele 22.4 motors. These were mounted in the front and rear of the car, and the driver sat between them. It was also the first non-American car to run on Daytona Beach for a land speed record attempt. In 1927 Sir Henry Segrave piloted the car to a new land speed record of 203.79 miles per hour (327.97 km/h), the first car to reach a speed over 200 mph (320 km/h). It is today at on show at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, Hampshire.
