Sun Crusher
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sun Crusher is a prototype superweapon from the Star Wars universe and probably the most powerful weapon ever constructed by the Empire. It first appeared in the Jedi Academy Trilogy by Kevin J. Anderson when Han Solo was captured by Moruth Doole, overseer of Kessel. There Solo met a young man named Kyp Durron, who helped Solo to escape the spice mines where they were being held prisoner, and steal a ship. He was forced into the Maw, where only the latent Force abilities of Kyp Durron, partially schooled by Vima-Da-Boda, enabled them to navigate safely to the center of the cluster of black holes. Unfortunately, they had stumbled upon a long secret Imperial base (the Maw Installation), where they were immediately taken prisoner again, this time by Admiral Daala. The scientist who designed the Sun Crusher, and much of the original Death Star, Qwi Xux, learned that Solo had been on the Death Star and interrogated him on the experience. Solo managed to break through her naivete, and convince her of the Empire's intrinsic evil. Convinced, she aided them in their escape - taking her newest project with them. Their escape did not go unopposed, but the Sun Crusher was so fast, and its quantum-shifted armor so tough, that the escapees simply rammed the first of the four Star Destroyers in their way, destroying it and securing their freedom.
It was eventually stolen by Kyp Durron in his quest for revenge against the Empire during the events of Kevin J. Anderson's novel Dark Apprentice. Under the influence of the spirit of the Sith Lord Exar Kun, Kyp used the Force to retrieve the weapon from within the gaseous planet of Yavin, where the Rebel Alliance had placed it, in fear of its power. His rampage in the Sun Crusher culminated in the destruction of Carida and its entire solar system, along with several other areas, including the Cauldron Nebula.
The Sun Crusher is a near-indestructible craft which can destroy entire star systems using a resonance torpedo that causes a star to explode in a supernova. Its weapon systems, and its novel, indestructible quantum armor were developed in a secluded area known as The Maw, a unique grouping of black holes nearby the prison/spice-production planet of Kessel that has a small safe zone within; each cost as much to develop as the entire Death Star. It is only about the size of a starfighter, yet its armor was powerful enough to withstand a glancing blow from the main beam of the Death Star prototype, which was stored at the Maw installation.
The Sun Crusher was used by Kyp Durron to lure the prototype Death Star into a black hole, and both craft disappeared into the black hole, while Kyp escaped in a message cylinder.
