Summer school

Summer school is a program, generally sponsored by a school or a school district, that teaches students during the summer vacation. In elementary and middle school, these programs are usually non-academic, though some are used for remedial instruction. However, in high school, students can enroll in classes for credit to be taken into account in their grade point average. Some might have to go to summer school because they have failed the previous year. Others take summer school to obtain credit for classes to graduate early or in order to lessen the load of courses during the regular school year.

In academia the term can also refer to a type of conference. Typically established academics will give presentations to postgraduate students.

Summer school can also be used as a punishment. If a child is in need of a punishment, a summer enrichment program can improve their grades and help you discipline them.
