Summer Days (サマーデイズ?) is a non-stop animation adventure game developed by 0verflow (オーバーフロー). Based on the same formula as School Days, it uses full animated video to progress the story with the player being able to make (or not make) a choice. It was released on a double-layered DVD and required Windows Media 9 and DirectX 9. Summer Days is smaller than its predecessor, weighing at 5.92 GB on the DVD. It also does not have the violent endings that made School Days infamous.

Summer Days is an alternate universe prequel to the game School Days, set in the summer holidays just prior to the timeline of School Days. All the original characters are present, except it assumes that they all first meet during the summer holidays as opposed to during the first year of school. Although Kotonoha and Sekai, the heroines of the first game, are both present, the main heroine is Setsuna.

There are also more characters the player can end up with given the choices made in the game.

Summer Days has been plagued by the release of multiple patches, some over 1 gb in size, to correct a production mistake. As a result, Japanese fans have rated this game one of the worst to have been released.

Game caption: "If I could come across you in the summer, my destiny would be changed into other."

[edit] Situation of Massive Multiple Patch Releases

Japanese fans, because of a production mistake, have rated the game the worst yet. According to the company website and apology, they sent a copy which included a mixture of old data and code to be produced - as a result, some endings were inaccessible and at times the video would not play. The two patches required to run the game properly are 1.05 and 1.09B, which are 1.66 gb and 271 mb respectively. They are being distributed through both BitTorrent and HTTP. The company is offering to replace all discs from the original pressing, and all subsequent discs sold in stores will contain the most up-to-date version of the game.

Users who had pre-ordered the game detected the original problem. The company later released a patch on June 22 2006 - just one day after starting sales. The patch was 2.3 gb in size and the number of downloaders overloaded the company's servers. The patch fixed some problems, but also compounded on other problems such as inaccessible scenes, endings and the removal of the mosaic in hentai scenes.

Soon after, patches 1.01B (1.25GB) and 1.021 were released. The company used BitTorrent technology to distribute the patches to prevent server outages.

Despite the patches, further bugs were discovered which prompted the release of more patches. Patch 1.03 was discovered to have a bug, which caused saved data to disappear, while 1.04 caused the game to enter an infinite loop. Patch 1.06 caused further problems, such as being unable to apply the patch itself. Patch 1.09 was released on July 23rd, with 1.09B following shortly solving most of the problems.

On October 18th, it was announced that owners who had sent in registration cards would be sent replacement copies containing the latest patched edition of the game (version 2.00.). Finally, a further patch (version 2.01) was released on October 30th. Many bugs (such as the problem with the pause/fast forward controls, black screen, scene inconsistencies etc) have been fixed.

[edit] Omake

The game DVD also includes a Flash-based omake game, featuring one of the endings from School Days in which Kotonoha kills Sekai on a bridge. The player plays as Sekai, and the game involves pressing the "X" and "Z" buttons to move a meter towards Kotonoha. If successful, then Sekai will manage to push Kotonoha away. If unsuccessful, then Kotonoha will kill Sekai. All the characters are done in chibi form, and Kotonoha and Sekai carry their respective weapons (a saw and a pair of kitchen knives respectively).
