Sumata (Japanese: 素股, literally: "real crotch") is a Japanese term for a non-penetrative male-female "dry" sex act popular in Japanese brothels. Sumata is a sex act within the frottage category performed using skin against skin. During the procedure, the female sex worker rubs the male client's penis with her hands, thighs, and labia majora. The goal is to stimulate ejaculation without actual penetration. This crotch play avoids regulations against sexual intercourse designed to constrain the spread of brothels offering erotic massage services. Its genesis and evolution is analogous to the growth in popularity during the 1990s of Western brothels and strip clubs offering non-penetrative lap dancing.
