Personal videocameras and recorders in the Soviet Union were rare artifacts that belonged only to those who afford them and find a way to procure them. This image was taken during the 1988 Sumgait pogroms in the city of Sumgait, Azerbaijan which shows the rioters in the town, the destruction of the automobiles and is a vital illustration that depicts a situation in the Soviet Union (riots, ethnic infighting) that had never occurred in the history of the country.
