Sultan was a Thoroughbred racehorse from Britain, and a great sire.

Sultan had a refined, beautiful head, well-sprung ribs, deep girth, and muscular, powerful hindquarters. Although long in the back, he was a good weight carrier and was sound, racing until the age of eight.

Sultan had a good race career, winning 14 times. As a two-year-old, racing for Crockford, he won the July Stakes, and placed second in the Derby Stakes, losing to Tiresias. He was one of the favorites in the St. Leger, but broke down in his morning gallop before the race. As a four-year-old, he placed second in the Port Stakes. When five, he won the Gold Cup as Newmarket. He beat Gustavus (a Derby winner) in a match race as a six-year-old.

When he was seven, Sultan was purchased by Lord Exeter. Racing for him, the stallion won the Trial Stakes for a second time, another race at Newmarket, which was his preferred venue for running.

Sultan was then retired to the Marquis' stud farm at Burleigh. He went on to be the leading sire in Britain for six consecutive years (1832-1837), producing classic winners, five of them Two Thousand Guineas winners: Bay Middleton (Two Thousand Guineas winner, Derby Stakes winner), Achmet (Two Thousand Guineas winner), Green Mantle (winner of the Oaks), Galata (won bothe One Thousand Guineas and the Oaks), Augustus (Two Thousand Guineas winner), Ibrahim (Two Thousand Guineas winner), Destiny (One Thousand Guineas winner), and Glencoe (Two Thousand Guineas winner).
