Sulitjelmabanen or the Sulitjelma Line was a railway between Finneid in Fauske to Sulitjelma in Nordland, Norway. The railway was a branch line of Nordlandsbanen until it was abandoned in 1972.
[edit] History
The construction of the railway started in May 1891 when the mining company in Sulitjelma decided to build a railway betewen Sjønstå and Fossen. The track was imidiatley expanded to Hellarmo and finished the next year. The line was the first in Northern Norway.
The expansion to Fagerli started in 1912 and at the same time the gauge was increated from 750 mm to 1067 mm. The official opening of the renovated and expanded line was on July 15, 1915.
The line between Sandnes and Fagerli was removed in 1950, but in 1953 the work with expanding the line to Finneid was started. There were built three long tunnels, Grønnlifjell Tunnel, Hårskolten Tunnel and Sjønståfjell Tunnel, each with a length between 2,400 and 2,800 meters. Operation of the line to Finneid started in December 1956. A new tunnel was opened through Stokkviknakken on November 30, 1962. After this the railway had a total length of 35.8 km.
Closing of the line occured on July 22, 1972 and the railway line, including the tunnels, were rebuilt to a road, Route 830. This work was concluded in 1975.
