Sufi rock

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term Sufi rock describes the sound of famous Pakistani rock band Junoon. Nadeem F. Paracha claims to have coined the term in 1993 to define Junoon's then pioneering process of fusing conventional rock music with subcontinental Sufi music and imagery. The term became popular in India and Pakistan when it was picked up by MTV-India in the late '90s.

It should be noted that newer bands in the Pakistani music scene, such as Izteraab, are also placed into the Sufi Rock category.

Firms like Trident Entertainment in Malaysia, are pioneers in producing such records. But it has no link with sufism.[citation needed] It is haram according to sharia.[citation needed]
