[edit] History

Sudbury Upper School (full name 'Sudbury Upper School and Arts College') is a 13 - 18 upper school in the town of Sudbury, Suffolk. The school was established in 1972, following the change to the comprehensive school system. Sudbury Upper School was an amalgamation of Sudbury Grammar School, the High School for Girls and the Modern Secondary School.

[edit] Current Information

The school has an average student population of approximately 1,100, with 220 in the sixth form. The school has a separate performing arts block, a sports centre open to the public and a recent extension housing the modern foreign languages and mathematics departments.

The uniform consists of a black v-neck sweater and white dress shirt, both of which sport the school's logo on the left breast. The uniform previously consisted of a plain white shirt and a black and red striped tie, but this ceased for the new intake in 2005. The school's logo is a modified version of the town crest, specifically stripped down to only the crest section, which has also been slightly modified in keeping with the modern atmosphere of the school.

[edit] Future Developments

The school is planning on extending lessons to 100 minutes (from 60 minutes) in September 2008. Plans to build a new block on the site to teach construction are in action with building set to begin in Summer 2007. The school is working closely with its sister school, Gt. Cornard Upper School, to enable students to access a specialist curriculum across both sites. Gt. Cornard Upper School students will to be able to access Performing Arts at SUS and Sudbury students can make use of their Technology specialism. This should eventually allow development of the 14 lines of Vocational Education between the two schools, with 7 lines available through each site, to students of both sites.

[edit] Extra-curricular

A popular extra curricular music event at the school is the 'Scuzzfest'. The show was originally started in 2004 by teacher Mr Lloyd as a one off concert, but has since become an annual event, despite Mr Lloyd Leaving the school in July 2006. The event has increased in size each year, always drawing large crowds. Scuzzfest involves many bands, from or connected to, the school performing a small set of about 4 or 5 songs each, with normally the biggest school band going last. It is an evening event lasting approximately 2 1/2 hours in duration. This year another smaller show was held on 20th March 2007 named 'Son Of Scuzz', where some of the bigger bands performed longer sets (5 - 7 songs). Scuzzfest and Son of Scuzz are both now totally organized by students.
