Sudbury Spartans
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sudbury Spartans play in the Northern Football Conference against Oakville, Oshawa, Milton, Mega City (Toronto Maddogs), Tri City, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Quinte Limestone, Markham's Toronto Raiders and Sarnia.
The Spartans Football Club is the longest, continuously-operating sports organization in Sudbury (est. 1953).
The genesis of the team lies back more in June, 1954 when Sudbury joined North Bay and New Liskeard to form the Northern Rugby Football Union, the predecessor to the NFC.
Originally named "Hardrocks" to reflect the Sudbury's predominant mining industry, the moniker was changed to "Spartans" in 1967 by then rookie head coach Sid Forster who felt the old name sounded more like a street gang then a football team. [1]
Sudbury has won more NFC Championships (18) than any other team in the league. Many of the Spartans have gone on to play in the CIAU, NCAA, CFL, and NFL ranks.
