The majority of the population of this department is of mixed race, mulattos also other mixtures with Arabs and East Indians. These southern parts of Haiti are where Europeans hid during revolutions and, in more recent years, have returned and settled alongside Haitians - mostly European men and Haitian women, also referred to as Natives as their racial ancestry includes that of the native population that existed before Haiti came into being.
