[edit] Licensing
This is a screenshot of copyrighted computer software for Linux, and the copyright for its contents is most likely held by the author(s) or the company that created the software. It is believed that the use of a limited number of web-resolution screenshots:
…qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Fair use for more information. To the uploader: please add a detailed fair use rationale for each use, as described on Help:Image page, as well as the source of the work and copyright information. |
[edit] Fair use in sudo
Though this image is copyrighted, I believe its use on Wikipedia qualifies as fair use under U.S. copyright law because:
- It is a single screenshot of a program, and thus does not perform the functions of the program itself.
- It's not even a screenshot of the entire window.
- Use on Wikipedia does not limit the ability to market Ubuntu.
- This screenshot was taken from the free-of-charge edition of Ubuntu, so the Ubuntu people are not directly making any money off this feature anyway.
- sudo is distributed under a BSD-like license [1]
- Screenshots of copyrighted software are commonly included in both commercial and non-commercial 3rd-party works.
