Suches, Georgia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Suches, Georgia is an unincorporated area located in Union County, Georgia. With an altitude of around 3,000 feet, Suches describes itself as "The Valley Above The Clouds." It is the highest elevation community in the state. It is the birthplace of Arthur Woody, a forest ranger who was a key figure in the early history of Chattahoochee National Forest. Suches is about a mile from the Appalachian Trail (AT) as it goes through Woody Gap. Hikers are seen in town especially in the spring, picking up mail at the local post office and supplies at the general store.

The local school is Woody Gap School, the smallest public school in the state of Georgia. The historical marker in front of the school lists it as the homestead of Joseph E. Brown, governor of Georgia during the Civil War. The current businesses in Suches include Budget Propane, the general store, TWO motorcycle resort, Mountain Property Limited (the local realtor) and the U.S. Post Office.

Suches isn't on the way to anywhere, so visitors tend to be hikers from the AT, motorcyclists enjoying the "Georgia Triangle", bicyclists (especially in recent years since the advent of the Tour de Georgia and Six Gap/Three Gap races), hunters and fishermen, and tourists enjoying the fall colors.
