Subhan'allah

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Subhan'allah (Arabic سبحان الله) is an Arabic phrase oftentimes translated as "Perfect Glory is to God". In reality, the Arabic root word of sa-ba-ha means to "float" or "swim". Proclaiming "Subhan'allah" therefore is a recognition that one is "swimming" or "floating" in and is surrounded by the Mercy of Allah, whether in a situation that is viewed as difficult or easy. It is commonly used by Muslims as an exclamation of joy or relief after a period of hardship and difficulty. As it is a simple and short term, it is frequently used by non-Arab Muslims.

It is also often cited during the Islamic prayer (salat). During the sermon (khutba) in the mosques it might be exclaimed by the listeners the in same sense as "hallelujah" in a Christian church.
